For the first time in quite a while, there are some exciting new films on the way and I’ve just had the pleasure of watching through REC 2 and the surprising Dogtooth so I have some things to talk about.

I just slogged through an obscure monster flick from the very beginning of the 80′s (which is coincidentally also the very beginning of my life). The Boogens is a dark and effective film despite being dragged down by too much talk and not nearly enough action.

A mine is purposely demolished to seal up these turtle-like creatures. Years later when they attempt to re-open the mine, the Boogen are set free to cause very little trouble and kill very few. Practically harmless.

The kill scenes are few and far between and the movie relies on the killing being done off screen which is not uncommon. The corpses and creature aftermath are enjoyably bloody and there are a few decent “It’s definitely dead now” jump scares.

I’m a big fan of creature features from the 80′s. Critters, Ghoulies, CHUD are some of my favorites. The Boogens is a hilarious bit of nostalgia and you’ll be hard pressed to find your own copy.

2010 will be a horrific year and I plan to share every moment.

Two horrific murders take place in a small home in England. The house becomes vacant and a University professor/paranormal investigator moves in to try and document ghostly doings with the help of her tech guy and the troubled new student from her class. Clive Barker’s Book of Blood is yet another disappointing adaptation of an amazing authors work.

I really wanted to like this movie. It started out really well, interesting story, likable characters. It then proceeded to turn into a sequel to Disney’s Haunted Mansion. When it came time to reveal actual, physical ghosts they were cartoony and ridiculousness which made it impossible to continue the suspension of belief.

The terrible choice on special effects turned what was otherwise a dark and eerie film into a terrible episode of Are You Afraid of the Dark. It doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. The few times that this film went with practical effects they were gruesome and well done, it was only in their heavy and poor use of CGI that completely assassinated this movie.

The scares are non-existent, the ghosts make you laugh out loud or vomit in embarrassment for whoever was responsible for them. They open up the movie with the main character captured for the marks on his skin and then flashback to the events leading up to that point, they then try to wrap up that initial story in the last 8 or 9 minutes of the movie.

I’ve lost my ability to put together paragraphs about this film, I just want to yell obscenities at the screen until I feel better about how boring and bad this movie was. Fuck.

Unless you are a Clive Barker adaptation completest, don’t even bother with this crap. I keep hoping someone will do a Clive Barker story justice but with the exception of Nightbreed it seems that Barker himself is the only one capable of bringing his work to screen properly.

I just recently picked up a copy of John Ajvide Lindqvist’s novel “Let the Right One In”. At this point I’ve watched the movie adaptation more times then I’d like to admit and thought it was about time to give the book a chance.

More often than not there are huge differences between movie adaptations and the books they’re based on. Let the Right One In is no different. The film and the book are both fantastic in their own ways but I was shocked at HOW different they are.

The book lacks the subtlety and child like sweetness I found in the movie. It ends up being a much more daunting and horrific story then the movie would lead you to assume.

It’s amazing that both formats turned out to be phenomenal and thoroughly enjoyable but bare almost no resemblance to one another. If you haven’t seen the movie, see it.

If you haven’t read the book, read it. You will not be disappointed. Thankfully some good vampire media had come out in the last few years. We needed something to combat the crap.
